Emancipation Day, Today!
For over 150 years, Purcellville has celebrated Emancipation Day, the September 22nd 1862 date on which President Abraham Lincoln announced he would order the January 1, 1863 manumission of all slaves in states rebelling against the Union.
Today’s celebration, organized the Carver Alumni Association, is designed to promote community pride and multicultural and generational awareness. The celebration is being held at the George Washington Carver Center, located off 21St Street near the A St. Intersection. All are welcome and encouraged to come! Several locally prominent speakers will highlight the event.
